Warning: My buddy in Denver swears by a 15-year-old tent he found at a garage sale.

He says the old materials are tougher than anything new under $300. I've always thought newer tech was just better, but now I'm not so sure. Are we too quick to dismiss older gear just because it's not the latest model?

Totally get that. My old backpack from college still outlasts any new daypack I've bought.

Right?! @owens.cameron, I swear they just don't make stuff like they used to.

Man that line about "they just don't make stuff like they used to" hits hard. I've got a 20 year old sleeping bag that still keeps me warm in freezing temps while my buddy's new fancy one already lost its loft. The thing is older gear was built with thicker materials and less complicated features, so there's less to break. Newer stuff tries to be ultralight and packable which means thinner fabric and more seams that fail. I'll take a heavy bombproof tent from the 90s over some flimsy modern one any day.
