That ranger at Glacier told me to ditch my tent stakes, saved my trip

I was setting up at a backcountry site in Glacier National Park last August and a ranger walked over, saw my standard tent stakes, and just laughed. She said 'you'll be chasing those down the mountain by midnight' and handed me a set of heavy-duty snow stakes she kept in her truck. Swapped them out in about 10 minutes, and sure enough a wind gust hit around 2 AM that would've flattened my tent. I still use those same stakes on any trip with exposed sites or rocky ground. Has anyone else had a gear tip from a random stranger that totally saved a camping trip?

Funny how a ranger's advice can save your gear but sometimes the best thing is just letting nature do its thing.

Whoa hold on, I gotta push back on that. Look, taking advice from a local is smart and all, but sometimes the best lessons come from getting it wrong yourself. If that ranger hadn't handed you those stakes, you would have learned a real hard lesson about wind and gear, and that kind of failure sticks with you way longer than being handed the fix. I mean, now you're just using her stakes, not knowing how to pick your own or read a site for wind patterns. Letting your tent get flattened once or twice is the kind of camping education you actually remember forever.
