Saw a guy using a cast iron skillet as a tent stake hammer at Big Sur last month

Dude at Big Sur last month probably just forgot his mallet and didn't want to walk back a mile to the car. Cast iron is tough as nails, it'll survive a few whacks on a tent peg. I've seen way worse, like people trying to hammer stakes with rocks that shatter into sharp pieces. Give the guy a break, it's not like he was using grandma's vintage heirloom skillet. Let's save the outrage for real camping disasters, like forgetting the toilet paper.

Three summers ago I watched a guy at Yosemite use his Swiss Army knife to pry open a can of beans and then slice through a plastic water bottle to make a funnel. People get creative when they're tired and hungry and a mile from the car. @aaronclark is right that a cast iron skillet is way better than a crumbly rock that could send sharp pieces flying. It's just one of those things where the camping community likes to argue about gear rules that don't always apply in real life.
