My $60 Coleman stove has outlasted 3 fancy backpacking stoves, and I'm done pretending that's a fluke
I keep seeing people say you need to drop $150+ on a stove for it to be reliable, but I've been using the same $60 Coleman two burner for 6 years now, probably 40 trips from Michigan to Tennessee, and it has never once failed to light. Meanwhile my buddy has gone through three of those ultralight canister stoves in the same stretch, two of them died at the worst possible time. I get that weight matters if you're hauling gear 10 miles in, but for car camping and short hikes the cheap workhorse wins every time in my book. Anyone else still running old cheap gear that just refuses to quit?

The canister stoves dying thing makes sense when you think about the fuel itself, not the stove. Those little isobutane mixes lose pressure in cold and the seals dry out and crack if they sit in a hot garage all summer between trips. My old white gas Coleman just keeps going because liquid fuel doesn't care about temp and you can rebuild the pump for like 12 bucks. That's the part nobody talks about, the cheap stuff tends to be the stuff you can actually fix instead of tossing.
