Guide book told me to bang rocks together, changed my whole fire setup

Last spring in Yosemite, some ranger laughed at my ferro rod and said 'just use a striker and cotton balls, trust me'. Swapped to a $3 flint striker and dry cotton, now I can get a flame in wind in under 2 minutes, has anyone else ditched fancy tools for the dumb simple stuff?

Swapped my pricey fire piston for a plain old magnesium block and a cheap knife last winter. Honestly, the $8 setup beats anything I've used, and it never fails me in damp Pacific Northwest weather. Tbh, I think fancy gear just gives you more ways to mess up, while simple stuff forces you to learn the basics right. Ngl, my buddy still brings his titanium sparker and it's gone twice on him, but my dumb little block is still kicking.
