Am I the only one who nearly bought the wrong sleeping pad because of the showroom floor?
Last month at the REI in Denver I tested a Nemo Tensor on their fake turf and it felt amazing, so I almost dropped $180 right there. Turns out the pad was resting on a padded mat the whole time, and when I tried it on actual packed dirt in Rocky Mountain National Park it felt nothing like the store. I now bring a piece of plywood to the shop and make them lay the pad on the bare floor before I test it. Has anyone else gotten fooled by a display setup like that?
That fake turf at the Denver REI got me too, on a Sea to Summit pad last spring. What worked for me was flipping the pad over and pressing my palm hard into the floor right next to it, because the turf adds a good half inch of squish you can feel side by side. I also started testing on the concrete by the bike section, which is about as close to packed dirt as you can get indoors. Ten minutes on that bare floor tells you way more than twenty on the display. My rule now is if the store wont let me move the pad, I dont buy it there.
