Met an old Minolta tech who changed my mind on fixed lens cameras

I had a conversation last month with a retired repair guy in Portland who worked on Minolta SLRs for 30 years. He told me he never saw a zoom lens from the 70s that was worth repairing, and it made me rethink how I approach old fixed lens cameras. I used to push customers toward zooms for convenience, but he showed me a 45mm f2 lens that still had sharp glass after 4 decades of use. Now I tell people to keep the prime lens and skip the zoom repair when the cost goes past $80. Has anyone else shifted their advice on this based on what older techs say?
