A customer's simple comment about my bench mat made me rethink my whole work area

Honestly, a guy brought in a Canon AE-1 last month and said, 'Your bench is so clean, but that mat is a dust trap.' Tbh, I never really looked at my old green mat. I checked it under a bright light and saw a ton of tiny fibers and dust stuck in it. I swapped it for a solid black silicone one from a local supply shop for about $35. Ngl, after two weeks, I'm finding way less junk in the shutter mechanisms I'm cleaning. Has anyone else switched up their bench covering and noticed a real difference?

Makes total sense, glad the swap helped.

Used to think the old way was fine. Seeing it work better now totally changed my mind.

Swapped my old rubber mat for a plain white Formica sheet cut to size from a hardware store. It was maybe $12 and it's like working on a clean piece of paper. I can spot a stray screw or dust particle from across the room now. @felixlee you're right about the details mattering more than we think. That old mat was hiding more dirt than I ever realized.
