Vent: spent 3 hours on a hinge mortise because I refused to re-shim the door
Had a face frame job in a bungalow off 42nd Street last month and the middle door on the upper run would not sit flush no matter what I did. Turned out the wall was out 3/8 inch over 30 inches, which I knew when I hung the frames, but I kept trying to tune it out at the hinge instead of pulling the whole box. Rookie move. Took me three hours and two sets of Blum overlays before I admitted the cabinet needed to come off the wall. Anybody got a fast way to check wall flat before hanging, or do you just trust the level and pray?
Been there man. Hung a pantry cabinet last year where the wall bowed in about a quarter inch right behind the middle stile and I spent way too long fighting the hinges instead of just furring it out. Now I run a straight edge across the wall in three spots before anything goes up, top middle and bottom, and if I see light under it I deal with that first. Takes two minutes and saves hours of dumb fiddling. That 3/8 over 30 inches would've jumped right out at you too. Live and learn, we all eat that one once.
