Update: hit 300 drawers on my slider and now I am second-guessing my setup
I counted the 300th drawer box I cut on my slider last week and it made me stop and ask if I should have gone with a dedicated line machine instead. Some guys online say a slider and a good jig is all a one-man shop needs, but others swear you lose speed once you pass 500 units. Where do you all draw the line between a slider setup and buying a real dovetail machine?
300 drawers is a good run to be asking that question. What I want to know is how much of that time is actually cutting versus clamping, unclamping, and messing with the jig between parts. If your cycle time per drawer is mostly machine time you are probably fine, but if you are spending as long setting up each batch as you are cutting it, that is the real signal. Are you running these in batches or one at a time off a cut list?
