Talking to a retiree at the lumber yard made me question my whole dust collection setup

He spent 10 minutes explaining how he ran his shop for 35 years with just a shop vac and a 5 gallon bucket, and now I'm staring at my 2 stage system wondering if I overthought all of this, has anyone else gone back to basics after a conversation like that?

You ever hear a story like that and just feel like you've been had by the marketing department? My buddy runs a small cabinet shop and for years he had this whole cyclone setup with fancy filters and ducting all over the place. Then his brother in law came over with a beat up shop vac and built a little bucket separator out of a 3D printer and some plywood. They compared how much sawdust got in the air during a big sanding job, and his brother's setup was honestly just as clean. He still uses the big system because it's quieter and he's got the space, but he told me he's never bought another high end filter bag again. Sometimes the simple stuff just works, and it's humbling to realize that after you've spent a chunk of change.
