Stopped by that old millwork shop in Galena and the guy let me dig through his scrap bin for free
I was up in Galena for a wedding over the weekend and wandered into a little millwork shop off the main strip just to kill an hour. The owner was planing down some 100 year old reclaimed oak and told me he tosses the offcuts in a bin out back instead of the dumpster. I asked if I could take a few pieces and he said take whatever, so I walked out with maybe 30 pounds of walnut and cherry shorts for nothing. I already glued up a small keepsake box out of two of them and the grain is unreal. Does anyone else hit up local mills for scrap, or am I the only one who does this on vacation?
Man, that is such a score. I do the same thing every time I travel, my wife hates it because she knows I will come back with a trunk full of wood instead of souvenirs. Last summer we were in Vermont and I stopped at a small sawmill that had a free pile out front, walked away with a bunch of curly maple shorts that ended up as knife scales and pen blanks. The guys at these shops usually just want the stuff gone, so they are happy to see it go to someone who will actually use it. That reclaimed oak he was planing sounds like the real prize though, 100 year old wood has grain you just cannot buy new. Good call on the keepsake box, that is the perfect project for free shorts with wild figure.
