PSA: The sliding miter saw demo at the Home Depot on 3rd Ave is a total joke

I was grabbing some plywood yesterday and stopped to watch a guy try out the display saw. He lined up a 2x4 and the fence was so out of square it wasn't even funny, maybe 3 degrees off. The cut looked like a crooked smile and he just shrugged and walked away. Has anyone else seen those demo stations totally go to heck or is it just my location?

A quick check with a combination square would tell you exactly how bad that fence really is. Most stores have a tool rental counter that can loan you a square for five minutes if you ask nicely. Save yourself the frustration and just bring your own speed square anytime you're testing a display saw.

Bring your own speed square" is the real pro move right there. I always toss mine in the car before heading to the big box stores, saves so much headache.

Go buy a decent square and check it yourself before you make the cut. Most of those demo saws get knocked around by customers all day long, its kind of expected that they wont be perfect. The real issue is people expecting a floor model to perform like a freshly calibrated tool.
