My old shop teacher saw my dovetail jig setup and asked why I was making cabinetmaking harder on myself
Ran into my old shop teacher at a hardware store in Fresno last week and he asked to see pics of my current work. I showed him my router jig setup for dovetails and he just shook his head and said 'you're fighting the wood instead of listening to it.' He told me he cut dovetails by hand for 30 years before touching a jig, and the jig guys he trained always struggled when something went wrong because they never learned to feel the grain. I've been thinking about that all week every time I fire up the router. Anyone else have an older tradesperson call out something in your process that stuck with you?
