Lost a whole maple slab to one dumb clamp slip on a Tuesday rush job
Was gluing up a 42 inch wide island top in the garage and my tail clamp slid right as I cranked it down, so the whole seam opened up a quarter inch. I had to cut the thing back down to 38 inches and tell the client in Dayton it would be a week late, which cost me $200 off the final bill. Anybody got a clamp setup that actually holds on wide glue ups, or am I just asking for too much?
Ever try the trick where you put a few screws in the seam itself? I used to think that was a hack for guys who didn't know how to clamp right, kinda laughed at it honestly. Then I watched a cabinet guy do a 48 inch glue up and he ran three screws down through the top right along the joint, then clamped like normal. That seam didn't budge a hair even when he torqued the pipe clamps hard. I've done it on every wide top since and never lost one to a slip. You just back the screws out after the glue sets and fill the holes, small price to pay for not eating 200 bucks.
