4 hours to fix a drawer slide gap that was 2mm off
Client called me out to a kitchen in Phoenix, said one drawer was catching and making this godawful scraping sound. I pop the drawer out and see the slide brackets are slightly twisted, like 2mm out of square. Should be a 15 minute job, right? Nope. Took me 4 hours because the cabinet box itself was racked, the face frame was glued in crooked, and the floor was out of level. Had to shim the box, re-drill the bracket holes, and cut a new notch in the drawer bottom. All because some guy on the original install used a level that was probably from a dollar store. Anyone else run into cabinets that are just subtly cursed from day one? What's the longest you've spent on a 'quick fix' that turned into a half day?

Is it just me, or does every job like this end up being about fixing the last guy's shortcuts? I mean, that level from the dollar store bit you in the butt, but the real curse was the cabinet box being racked from day one. Once the frame is glued in crooked, you're not fixing a drawer, you're rebuilding someone's bad decisions. I've spent a whole afternoon on a hinge that looked fine but the whole cabinet was slowly sagging, so I feel your pain. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather fix a total mess than a tiny gap, at least then the hours make sense. Hope you charged for the full four, cause that was a geometry problem, not a drawer problem.

...and honestly that's just the way it goes with anything built by humans, not just cabinets. Like, you ever buy a used car and find out the previous owner "fixed" the AC with a coat hanger? Or move into an apartment and the light switch has been upside down for years? It's the same pattern everywhere. Everyone thinks their little shortcut is invisible, but it always lands on someone else's plate eventually. We're all just out here inheriting each other's "good enough" and calling it a surprise. Your cabinet thing is just a more honest version of it, because at least you can see exactly where the lie started. The rest of us just have to bump into our crooked frames in the dark and wonder why nothing ever feels right.
