Was at a coffee shop last week and heard some lady say 'demure' like 3 times in one conversation
She used it to describe a latte, her outfit, and then the weather. Has anyone else noticed people digging up these old words from the 1800s just to sound classy?

Wait, demure hasn't been an 1800s word though - people have used it pretty steadily, just not in every day talk like that. Sounds like she was just trying too hard to be fancy.

Wait, @morganhill is she seriously calling 'demure' an 1800s word?

Is it possible she was being kind of sarcastic or playing a game with herself? Like maybe she was using that old timey word to see if anyone would side-eye her, you know, testing how far she could take it before someone called it out. I've done stuff like that before where I pick a weird word and just force it into every sentence for my own amusement, makes a boring errand a little more fun.
