Spent 3 hours trying to figure out what 'ghosting' meant in a work meeting

Last Tuesday my boss kept saying we needed to avoid 'ghosting' clients on the project. I thought he meant literally ignoring them, which seemed obvious. Turns out in my office 'ghosting' means a specific bug in our software that makes data disappear. Nobody told me that was the new term for it. I wasted half the day reading articles about dating ghosting before I asked a coworker and felt like an idiot. Has anyone else had a normal word get hijacked for a completely different meaning at their job?

Ask someone next time. Work slang is never worth guessing alone.

Hard disagree. Some slang you gotta figure out on your own or you look like you don't belong. Asking every time makes you look lost, especially if it's something basic like "pivot" or "circle back." I've seen new guys get laughed at for asking what "bandwidth" means. You're better off guessing from context and moving on. If it's something critical you can google it later. Nobody's career got ruined because they silently misunderstood "synergy" for a week.
