My cousin made me rethink saying 'slay' every time and it actually stuck

I was over at my cousin's place last week, she's 16 and really into TikTok slang. I used 'slay' to describe her new haircut, and she just gave me this look and said 'you're 32, please stop.' I thought she was being dramatic at first, but then she showed me this whole video essay about how older people using younger slang makes it lose its meaning. Now I catch myself before I say stuff like that. Anyone else had a younger relative call them out for using buzzwords wrong?

Dude, I feel this one hard. My niece is 14 and she straight up told me I was "cringe" for saying "bet" all the time. It stung a little, but she was right. Once she explained it, I realized how out of touch I sounded. Now I just nod along when the young ones talk and keep my old man slang to myself. It's actually kind of freeing not trying to keep up with whatever new word drops every week.

Nah, I gotta push back a little here @grant_allen85. I think owning it and using the slang anyway is part of the fun, even if they groan. My nephew told me I sounded like a "boomer trying to be cool" when I said "no cap," and I just doubled down and started saying it more. They'll laugh at you either way, might as well have a good time with it.
