Just realized I've been saying 'gaslighting' wrong for 2 years

I was telling my buddy in Nashville about how my dispatcher gaslit me over a route change, and he goes 'you mean he lied to you, right?' Turns out gaslighting is about making someone doubt their own reality, not just any old lie. I've been tossing that word around like confetti since 2022. Anyone else misuse a buzzword for months before someone corrected them?

Wait, so what did you actually say when you called it gaslighting? Like, did you tell people they were gaslighting you over something dumb like a wrong order at a drive-thru? That's the part I'm curious about. Because if you were using it for any lie, then the word basically just became "you're wrong" with extra steps. I had a coworker who did the same thing with "literally", she'd say "I literally died" about a boring meeting, and I never knew if she actually meant it or not. Did your buddy catch you doing it in front of other people, or was it just a one-on-one thing?
