Just learned 'demure' is being used totally different now on TikTok

My niece used it to describe a loud pink outfit last week and I was so confused. Turns out Gen Z flipped it to mean something like 'modest but still serving.' Anyone else feel like they need a dictionary update every month?

Nope, charlie_ellis nailed it in one.

Nah, this isn't that deep honestly. Language shifts all the time, people just notice it more now because TikTok moves at warp speed. "Demure" basically just got rebranded as a vibe word like how "slay" or "ate" got co-opted years ago. It's not a whole new dictionary, it's just kids playing with language like every generation does. Kinda funny people get bent out of shape over it when slang has literally always done this.

Funny, @charlie_ellis, but watching words lose all their actual meaning is just sad, not cute.
