I finally listened to that SEO guy about keyword stuffing in my blog posts
A dude in a Denver SEO meetup told me to stop cramming 'best coffee maker 2024' into every paragraph, and sure enough my bounce rate dropped 40% after I rewrote my top 10 posts. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a self-proclaimed guru that actually worked against you?

That 40% drop is solid proof, but I gotta push back a little here. I worked with a client last year who took "don't stuff keywords" too literally and ended up with zero optimization in their headings, so Google couldn't even tell what their post was about. The key is that those SEO meetup guys are right about readability being huge, but they often swing the pendulum too far the other way. Like, I still make sure my main keyword shows up in the H1, first 100 words, and maybe one or two natural spots after that, even if I'm not forcing it into every sentence. Your bounce rate went down because you stopped annoying readers, but if you strip out all intentional keyword placement you could lose traction on the terms you actually want to rank for.

Exactly this. I still drop my main keyword in the H1 and first paragraph even with "natural" writing.

Yeah that balance is tricky. I had a client who pulled all keywords from headings and lost half their traffic in 2 weeks.
