Had 5 years of dead grass patches until a lawn service guy told me the fix

I tried everything from extra watering to different fertilizers but the spots kept coming back. He said to check for compacted soil and aerate once in spring instead of fall. Did that this year and my yard finally looks even for the first time. Anyone else waste years on the wrong fix before someone pointed out the obvious?

Compacted soil and aerating in spring" is the exact fix I needed too. I spent THREE years dumping on expensive soil softeners before a neighbor finally told me to just rent an aerator for 50 bucks.

Three years on soil softeners" man that sucks. But is compacted soil really that big of a deal? My lawn gets walked on all the time, kids, dogs, never aerated it once. Grass is fine. Just mow it and forget it.
