Found out "brainrot" was named Oxford's word of the year for 2024 and I had to sit down
I was reading a BBC article last week about how younger kids talk online and it mentioned that Oxford picked "brainrot" as its word of the year for 2024. I thought it was just something my nephew says when he's scrolling on his phone, like calling a video dumb. Turns out people started using it way more in 2023 and 2024, and the official meaning is the supposed harm from consuming too much low quality online stuff. What got me is how fast it went from a joke word to something dictionary people actually track and measure. My nephew uses it for everything now, even for cereal he doesn't like. Anyone know if there's a site that shows when a slang word first started spiking, like a chart or something?
