Stuck with a $2,400 invoice nobody would pay, here's what got me out of it
Last November I was doing bookkeeping for a small construction outfit in Columbus and one of their vendor payments bounced twice. Turns out the owner's brother had been writing checks from a closed account to keep the job rolling, and now the supplier was demanding $2,400 within 5 days or they'd put a lien on the project. I sat in my kitchen with a spreadsheet open and the phone in my hand, trying to figure out how to explain this to the bank and the client without burning both relationships. Instead of calling everyone at once, I reached out to the supplier's accounts receivable manager and offered a partial wire of $900 that day plus a signed payment plan for the rest over 3 weeks. The owner called me crying, but the supplier accepted it because I put it in writing and added a late fee clause on my end so they felt protected. That saved the project and I now have a template for cash-flow emergencies that I use for every client with seasonal work. Has anyone else had to broker a weird payment plan to dodge a lien, and what terms did you use to get the other side to bite?
