Showerthought: paying for a premium budgeting app isn't worth it if you never open it

Signed up for YNAB for $99 a year back in March, barely touched it after week 2, and just realized I could have tracked my spending with a free spreadsheet instead. Anyone else waste money on a tool they thought would magically fix their habits?

Just bought a gym membership last week and already skipped three days. Same pattern exactly. People think spending money on something will somehow force them to actually use it. But it never works like that. The habit has to come first, then the tool supports it, not the other way around.

From what I've seen, the habit and the tool often build each other up gradually, not one strictly coming before the other. Some people need that paid app to give them the push to start, even if it doesn't stick right away. It's less about a rule and more about finding what clicks for you, your mileage may vary.

Your mileage may vary" is basically the story of my life. I've got a drawer full of fancy workout gear from past attempts that I swear will get used as soon as I buy the next pair of shoes. It's cheaper and less humbling to just start with a pushup on the floor, but here I am, drawer full of shame.
