PSA: I tracked every dollar for 90 days, and the cash envelope system beat my budgeting app by $340
I used both side by side from January to March, and the app kept letting me swipe without thinking while the envelopes forced me to stop, which is how I caught $340 I would've otherwise spent on takeout and random Amazon buys, so has anyone else gone back to paper after trying an app?
Oh man, I feel this so hard. I did the same thing last year and my app was basically just a fancy way to watch myself overspend in real time. The worst part was the little notification that said "you're doing great!" while I was blowing through my food budget by week two. With cash, once the envelope is empty, it's empty, and that little panic feeling actually made me cook at home instead of hitting the drive thru. I still use my app for bills and stuff but the fun money is all paper now. It's wild that going backwards actually works better.
