Pro tip: My client's side hustle hit $5k a month, but his main job is now a problem
Last week, a client of mine in Austin showed me his books. His online print shop started three years ago as a hobby and now brings in over $5,000 monthly. The issue is his 9-to-5 employer found out and is questioning his focus, saying it's a conflict. I see one side where he built real equity and income, and another where his primary employer feels shortchanged. Has anyone navigated a successful side business while keeping a full-time boss happy?

Wasn't there a case about this where the employee's contract had a non-compete clause?

My cousin in Dallas had this same problem with his woodworking Etsy shop. He sat down with his boss and showed his main job performance reviews were still strong. He offered to sign something saying he wouldn't use company time or resources, and that his products were in a totally different market. It worked because he proved his day job came first. Your client needs to show his boss the numbers that his main work hasn't slipped at all.

Oh man, that reminds me of my buddy's situation. His boss found his side hustle fixing game consoles and freaked out. He printed out his last six months of sales reports to show his main job numbers were actually up, and promised to never even check his repair emails at work. They let it go after that.
