Just found out my 'accountant' wasn't even certified. Cost me $2,400 in penalties.
Was talking to a buddy about tax stuff and he asked who did my returns. I said my guy Bob. He looked him up and Bob's license expired in 2019. I've been paying him $400 a year for 3 years. IRS hit me with penalties for stuff he filed wrong. Anyone ever successfully get money back from someone like that?

A buddy of mine sued his fake accountant in small claims court and actually won back most of the fees.

800 bucks my buddy paid some "tax pro" who fumbled his returns so bad he got audited lmao. I used to think you could just trust anyone with a website and a suit but @joseph_torres story is making me rethink that. That accountant buddy of yours had to be either real dumb or real bold to actually take it to small claims. Honestly sounds like the kind of win that makes you feel a little better even if it's just the fees back. Good for him honestly lol.
