Had to choose between a cheap franchise and starting my own dog grooming business, and I still don't know if I made the right call

Two years ago I had $15,000 saved up and a choice: buy into a popular dog grooming franchise for the name recognition, or rent a tiny space and go independent. I went with the franchise because they promised training and marketing help. Turns out the franchise fee ate my whole budget, I owed them 8% of every sale, and I was stuck using their overpriced shampoo brands. My buddy who started his own shop in the same strip mall is now pulling in $4,000 a month more than me after 18 months. Has anyone else picked the 'safe' business route and regretted it?

That 8% royalty was probably the real killer... eats at your margins way too fast.

Hold on, let me push back a little @riley_schmidt. That 8% royalty hurts but the franchise gave you a head start that a lot of people don't get. My cousin opened his own shop three towns over with no name recognition and spent the first year basically begging people to walk in the door. The franchise training might not be perfect but it saves you from making expensive mistakes on equipment and insurance. And that overpriced shampoo thing? Customers actually trust a known brand more than some random bottle, so it probably helps you charge more per groom. Your buddy might be making more now but he also had to learn everything the hard way, and that takes time and money too. The first few years are always rough no matter what you pick.
