Can we talk about how I saved $200 a month on office supplies

Last spring I ran a small accounting firm in Cleveland and realized we were blowing cash on printer paper and pens from the big box stores. I switched to a local wholesaler who sells reams for $3 less each, and now I’m down to $50 a month. Anyone else find smaller vendors cutting their operational costs?

Right, because nothing says "thriving business" like getting excited over a bulk discount on Bic pens. Next thing you'll tell me is you negotiated a better rate on toilet paper and now you're basically the king of Cleveland.

Smaller vendors usually have way less overhead than the big chains, so they can pass those savings on to you. The real trick is finding ones that also offer delivery for free or cheap, otherwise you're burning gas and time running around. My old boss did something similar with janitorial supplies and cut his monthly spend by almost half after the first year. The key is building a relationship with them too, because once they know you're a regular they might even give you first dibs on closeout deals. Plus you're supporting a local business instead of feeding the corporate machine, which feels a lot better when you write that check. Why wouldn't more people do this for stuff they use every single day?
