That friend who told me to just use a plain notebook instead of a fancy dotted one

Tbh I was super annoyed when my buddy Mike told me to grab a $3 composition notebook instead of the $25 Leuchtturm I had my eye on. I thought he was just being cheap and didn't get the whole bullet journal thing. Well after 6 months I gotta admit he was right. The cheap paper handles my fountain pen ink way better and I don't feel bad messing up pages. Has anyone else had someone talk you out of spending more money and it actually worked out?

Wait, @the_parker you grabbed a grocery store notebook? Like the ones near the checkout with the puppies on the cover? I mean idk that's a whole other level of commitment, I thought my composition book was pushing it but that's wild. Maybe it's just me but I still feel like I need at least a grid to keep my handwriting from looking like a toddler drew it.

Think about it though, this is just like every other hobby we get into these days. We all start believing we need the expensive version of something before we even know if we'll stick with it. I did the same thing with running shoes a few years back, dropped way too much money on a pair I barely wore. Then my buddy started running in his old beat up sneakers and he still finishes 5Ks faster than me. We get sold on the idea that the gear makes the skill, but really it's just showing up and doing it that matters.

Cracked up at @the_parker saying grocery store notebooks are the move - thats honestly next level budget journaling and I respect it. Tried that myself once and my handwriting looked like a spider had a seizure on the page so I had to switch back to some cheap graph paper I found at the dollar store. Guess we're all just figuring out that fancy gear doesnt make you creative, it just makes you broke with a pretty notebook.

Yeah the "just use a plain notebook" advice got me too. Picked up a standard spiral bound at the grocery store and honestly it's way more freeing than worrying about wasting expensive pages.
