My weekly spread fell apart by Wednesday this week

I tried a new layout with 8 boxes for tasks instead of my usual 6, and by Wednesday afternoon I had scribbled in the margins so much it looked like a mess. The problem was I underestimated how many work deadlines would hit this week from my project at the Cleveland office. Has anyone else found a layout that handles unpredictable days without turning into chaos?

Unpredictable days without turning into chaos" - that's your problem right there. You're treating a planner like it's supposed to fix unpredictability. It won't. Planners are for organizing known stuff, not for catching every random thing that pops up. If your work week is that unpredictable, maybe the issue is you're trying to force a system that doesn't match reality. Just write down the 3-4 most important things and let the rest slide. Stop chasing a layout that handles chaos. Chaos doesn't want to be handled.
