Tried the 50/30/20 rule for 3 months in Denver and my grocery budget went up $90
I set up a separate account for wants and needs with my bank in Denver and moved money over every payday. Three months in, I checked the totals and my grocery spending was actually $90 higher than when I just used one account, because I kept dipping into the wants pile for snacks. I learned that splitting money into buckets only works if you actually leave the buckets alone. Now I pull cash for groceries on Sunday and leave the card at home. Has anyone else had a budget system backfire like this?
The cash thing is smart but you can take it a step further. What worked for me was doing the envelope thing but only for the categories where I kept messing up, not the whole budget. Groceries and eating out were my weak spots so those got cash, everything else stayed on the card because I don't overspend on gas or rent obviously. The problem with splitting everything is you make 10 buckets and then you just rob them all anyway, it's too much work to keep up with. Pick your two worst spots and make those cash only, leave the rest alone.
