That coworker who told me to save 50% of every paycheck
My buddy Mike at the warehouse told me to put away half of each check no matter what. I tried it for 3 months and ended up eating instant noodles for dinner 4 nights a week. Has anyone else gotten advice that sounds good on paper but just doesn't work with a regular income?

samjohnson nailed it with that "plotting revenge" line because that's exactly what happens. That 50% thing works if you've got a safety net or zero bills, but for regular folks it just leads to burnout and bad eating habits. The real kicker is nobody talks about the mental toll either - I was checking my account every single day freaking out if I spent three bucks on coffee. Better advice would be something like 20% and actually sticking to it instead of aiming for a number that makes you miserable.

Man, 50% sounds like something you say when you're trying to sound smart at a party. I tried the same thing once and my bank account was happy but my stomach was plotting revenge. Ended up eating plain rice with hot sauce for a week straight just to make rent. That kind of advice works great if you're already making six figures or living in your parents' basement. Real life hits different when you have actual bills and like, food cravings.
