PSA: my neighbor talked me out of the envelope system and into one shared grocery card
I've been doing cash envelopes for almost two years and swore by them, but my neighbor Dana stopped me in the driveway two weeks ago while I was sorting my grocery cash. She asked how much I was pulling out each month and when I said $480 she just laughed and told me she and her husband use one prepaid card for food instead. She said the cash was making me feel broke every time she saw me counting it, and that the card let her check the balance on her phone at the store. Honestly she had a point I didn't want to hear. I tried it for one week and caught myself putting back a $9 block of cheese because I could see the real number, not just whatever bills were left. The envelopes always felt like I was rationing, but the card feels like I'm just tracking. I still keep $40 in cash for the farmers market on Saturdays. Has anyone else switched from envelopes to a card and stuck with it, or did you go back?
