Pro tip: I switched to a cash envelope for my food budget and it felt weird at first.

I gave myself $75 cash for groceries last week, which is my normal amount. I went to the store and put everything in my cart like usual. When I got to the checkout, I realized I was over my cash limit by about $12. I had to put back a few things I didn't really need, like a bag of chips and a fancy cheese. Has anyone else had a moment like that where using cash made you stop and think?

Oh man, that moment of truth at the register is REAL. I had the exact same panic last month, staring at a pack of fancy beer and my last twenty. @the_cameron, I absolutely put stuff back now, but my first time I was that guy who just ditched the ice cream on a random shelf. Felt like a total jerk when I saw it melting later. Cash makes you face the music right there, no swiping your way out of it. You learn real quick what you actually need versus what just looks good.

So you actually put stuff back?

Yeah, the "put stuff back" thing. I used to just leave things wherever. Then I saw a video of how much extra work it creates for staff, and it clicked for me. Now I always return my cart and put things back where I found them.
