My dad told me to stop using cash envelopes... and he was right

For years, I did the cash envelope thing for groceries and fun money, using about $400 a month. My dad, an accountant, kept saying it was a bad idea because you lose track of where it actually goes. I finally switched to a free app three months ago to just track every card purchase. Turns out, I was spending almost $100 a month on small things like coffee and snacks that I never wrote down from the cash. The envelopes made me feel in control, but they hid the real leaks. Has anyone else moved away from cash and found it worked better?

My grandma still keeps her grocery money in a cookie tin on the counter. She swears by it, but last week she couldn't remember if the forty dollars missing was for pills or a haircut. I tried showing her my phone app, but she just waved her hand and said numbers on a screen lie. It's funny how the old way feels solid until you realize the details are just floating away.

Oh perfect, the cookie tin accounting system. Nothing says financial security like a mystery forty dollar gap between medicine and a bad haircut.

My cousin had the same problem with her cash system... she was always short and couldn't figure out why. She read a blog post about how cash makes spending feel invisible after the fact, which totally clicked for her. Switching to card tracking showed her all those little five dollar decisions that add up so fast. The envelope feels safe in your hand, but it doesn't leave a trail you can follow back.
