I gave up the 50/30/20 rule after 3 years and my savings finally moved
I gave up the 50/30/20 rule after 3 years and my savings finally moved. Last month I switched to a zero-based budget where every dollar has a job. My rent in Austin eats 45% of my income, so the old buckets never matched reality. I put $340 extra into my emergency fund in the first week. Anyone else ditch the popular percentages and just start assigning every dollar manually?

The percentage buckets never made sense when your rent is that high, so giving every dollar a specific job just feels way more real. Once you see where $340 actually came from, it's hard to go back to guessing.

Man, that's the thing that gets me. Once you track it that close, you start noticing how your money leaks into small stuff, like that $4 coffee you swore was a treat but turns out is a monthly subscription you never signed up for. @keith_rodriguez hit it right, it's less about math and more about admitting what's actually happening. The buckets were always a goal, but the dollar-by-dollar thing is just the truth.
