Hit $10,000 in my emergency fund last week and it feels like a weight lifted

I honestly didn't think I'd get there for another year, but a side gig with my neighbor's landscaping came through with an extra $800. That made the final push. It matters because my car's transmission is iffy and now I don't panic every time it makes a noise. What milestone surprised you when you hit it?

Actually I gotta be honest, I don't think $10k is really a full emergency fund. Most experts say you need 3-6 months of expenses saved up, not just a flat number. But hey, it's still a huge step and way better than nothing, so congrats on getting there

Doesn't it feel like the real world has a way of making the "experts" look like they're living in a different reality? The whole idea that you can just throw a flat number on security is why people end up digging out of holes for years instead of avoiding them in the first place.

Had a buddy who thought he was doing fine with his emergency fund until his water heater burst and flooded his basement in the same week his dog needed emergency surgery. His $3,000 cushion got wiped out in like 48 hours and he had to put the rest on credit cards. It took him almost two years to dig out of that hole.
