DAE face pushback when suggesting budget friendly changes to group plans?

In my book club, we used to drop around $20 each at a cafe every month for our meetings. I suggested we switch to hosting at our homes instead, to save some cash. Half the group loved it, saying it felt more personal and let us buy more books. The other half got annoyed, saying going out was a nice treat and now it feels like a chore. Last time, we saved over $100 total by meeting at my place, but one friend still brought expensive pastries to keep it fancy. It's creating this weird vibe where I feel like I'm being cheap, but I see it as a smart money move. I'm stuck between enjoying the savings and keeping everyone happy. How do you handle when your budgeting wins clash with what friends want?

Always thought going out was part of the fun until my own group switched. Seeing the extra cash for more books each month changed my mind completely. Now the cozy meetings feel like the real point, not just a backdrop.

Hey @the_patricia, I get what you mean about cozy meetings, but I still love going out with my book group! Getting out of the house changes the vibe and makes it feel more special to me. The mix of new places and good talks is what keeps it fun for us.

You're both missing the point a bit. It's not about saving money or going out. A good book group works because people actually read the book and want to talk about it. The location is just where that happens. If the chat is weak, a fancy cafe won't fix it.
