Am I the only one who didn't know a 401k match can come with a vesting schedule that steals it back?
I was reading the fine print on my benefits portal at 11pm on a Tuesday and saw the words '3 year graded vesting' in tiny gray text, and I just sat there staring at it. My old job matched 4% from day one, so I always thought a match was a match and it was mine the second it hit the account. Turns out my new employer in Raleigh only gives me 33% of their match after one year, 66% after two, and the full amount after three, which means if I leave early I hand back real money. I ran the numbers and it is about $2,100 of their contributions sitting in limbo right now, and I make $58k so that is not pocket change to me. Nobody said a word about this during onboarding, not the recruiter, not the HR video, not the guy who walked me to my desk. I get why companies do it, they want people to stick around, but hiding it in a benefits PDF feels like a trap for anyone who does not read every page. Has anyone here actually lost match money by quitting before they were fully vested, and did you try to get any of it back?
