Why does nobody talk about the Lisbon airport bus ticket machine?

I stood at that machine for 45 minutes trying to buy a single fare to the city center, because the card reader kept rejecting my foreign debit card. The hack of taking the bus over a taxi is useless if you can't actually get a ticket. Has anyone found a reliable workaround for those specific machines?

Yeah those machines are a total nightmare. I ended up just paying the driver in cash, which worked fine. Maybe it's just me but I think they rely on that confusion to sell more expensive taxi rides.

Wait, didn't I see a news article last week saying the city is finally looking for a new company to run them? It was all about how the contract is up soon. Honestly, it can't happen fast enough. I got stuck at one for twenty minutes trying to buy a simple train ticket. It feels like they haven't updated the software since 2005.
