Vent: Ride-share fare confusion with a new travel buddy

I've noticed more people using ride-shares to cut travel costs. This led to an awkward moment when my buddy didn't bring cash for their share. How do you set clear payment rules before sharing rides?

Ugh, didn't we all learn this the hard way? Honestly, I had a friend who would always 'forget' her wallet until we got to our destination. It got so awkward I started just asking for their half in cash before I even booked the ride. Now my rule is you pay me right when we get in, or you front the cash for the whole thing and I pay you back. Saves the weirdness of trying to sort it out later.

Yeah, @the_elliot's idea to pay right when you get in is spot on. I stopped giving rides to people who "forget" their money. Now it's cash up front or find another way.

Understand completely what @the_elliot means. I had a cousin who would never chip in for gas on road trips. We started making him pay upfront before we even left the driveway. It sounds harsh but it saved so many arguments later. Now I apply that rule to any shared costs with friends, like concert tickets or pizza orders. Just clears the air from the start.
