Vent: My flight to Lisbon got rerouted and I ended up saving $300

I was flying from Chicago to Lisbon last fall, and a huge storm canceled my direct flight. The airline put me on a new route with a 9-hour layover in Madrid. I was so annoyed, but I used the Skyscanner app to check prices from Madrid to Lisbon while I was stuck there. A local bus company had a route for only 22 euros, so I canceled the second flight leg, got a refund for that segment, and took the bus. It added 4 hours to my trip, but I saved a ton of money. Has anyone else had a travel mess turn into a budget win like this?

Saved a ton of money" is a bit much. You traded a flight for a 4 hour bus ride to save $300. That's like $75 an hour for your time. Not exactly a jackpot.

grace_bailey is missing the point. Saving $300 is a huge win for most people. That's grocery money for a month or a nice hotel on the next trip. Time on a bus isn't wasted if you're cool with it.

Honestly Grace has a point, 300 bucks is nice but you lost a whole afternoon on a bus. Was your time really worth that little? I would have just taken the flight and enjoyed Madrid for a few hours instead of rushing to a bus station.
