Update: took the $38 overnight bus to Chiang Mai instead of the $95 flight, and I lost a full day to a 3am rest stop
Everyone on r/travel insists overnight buses are the best budget move in Thailand, but I got in at 7am wrecked and slept through my one full day there, which cost me way more in lost time than the $57 I kept. Has anyone actually had an overnight bus work out, or is it just me who hates them?
How much of that $57 did the lost day actually cost you though? Because if you figure your time is worth even ten bucks an hour, the math already flips against the bus. Add the wasted sleep day and the fact that you were useless until noon, and the flight starts looking cheap. The overnight bus only wins if you can actually sleep on buses and treat the ride as your night, and most people can't do that sitting up while the driver slams the brakes every hour. Next time price it as flight plus a real night of sleep versus the bus plus a lost day, and the bus usually loses.
