Unpopular opinion: Hostels are overrated for solo budget trips

Met this guy in a Berlin hostel who bragged about saving $15 a night, but he spent $40 on lockers and laundry. Plus he couldn't sleep because of snorers. Has anyone else found cheaper private rooms on Airbnb that work out better?

Met a guy in a Barcelona hostel who paid $50 for a tiny capsule bed and then another $20 for earplugs and an eye mask to get any sleep. Meanwhile I found a whole private room on Airbnb for $45 a night and slept like a baby. Call me a princess but my sanity is worth more than $5 a night.

Buddy tried the capsule once. Snored so loud he woke himself up.

Did your buddy try one of those pod things too? My friend Rachel did the capsule thing in Tokyo and spent half the night banging her head on the ceiling every time she rolled over. She ended up booking a cheap business hotel the next day and said it was the best money she ever spent.
