Tried sleeping at a hostel vs a budget hotel in Bangkok last week.

The hostel was $8 a night but the shared bathroom line at 7am was insane. The hotel cost $25 but I actually got to shower before checkout - has anyone else found that extra $17 is worth it?

OH MAN, I gotta push back on this one a little. I actually PREFER hostels for exactly that reason - the chaos at 7am is part of the experience to me. You meet people in line, swap stories, figure out who's rushing for a flight and who's hungover. I've had some of my best Bangkok mornings standing barefoot in that bathroom queue. The $17 is worth it if you need quiet and a guaranteed hot shower, but for me the hostel vibe IS the trip.
