TIL a buddy's advice about booking hostels through their own website saved me $45 on a 3-night stay in Portland
He told me third-party sites tack on fees and he was right, the hostel gave me a free breakfast and no booking fee for going direct, anyone else find that works better for smaller places?

Oh man, that is exactly what happened to me last year. I booked this little bed and breakfast in Vermont through a big site and ended up paying almost thirty bucks more than what the place had listed on their own page. The owner was super nice about it too, gave me a free map of hiking trails and a discount on my next stay when I told her I booked direct. Now I always check the property's own website first after finding that out. Its wild how those third party sites sneak in those extra fees, makes you wonder what else they are charging for.
