This guy at the Denver hostel swore by his 'free breakfast' hack

I was in Denver last fall, and this guy in the kitchen was stuffing his pockets with apples and bagels from the hostel's free breakfast. He looked at me and said, 'If you take enough, you can skip lunch... saves you fifteen bucks a day.' I watched him wrap four bagels in napkins and shove them in his jacket. It just felt off, like he was taking food from other travelers. I get trying to save money, but there's a line. Has anyone else run into people who take the free breakfast thing way too far?

Ever just take one extra for later and call it good?

Oh man, that's the official start of the snack stash. I grabbed an extra bag of chips from the kitchen last week and hid it in my desk drawer. It's gone now, obviously, but for a few days it felt like a secret victory. That "for later" plan never really works out for long.

Totally get it. My trick is to put the extra somewhere really annoying to get to, like the top shelf in the kitchen. Out of sight is one thing, but if you have to drag a chair over, you really have to want it. Makes you think twice before you just grab it.
